Global Science Networking Initiatives
Scientific research has always been grounded in data, with a framework of theory, experimentation, modeling/simulation, and data analytics. However, new technologies have enabled new knowledge discovery by enabling transformational scientific explorations that interrogate massive amounts of data, in part, data generated by increasingly sophisticated instrumentation and distributed to powerful computational facilities. These facilities allow insight into phenomena from the macro to the micro level and all areas between them with a visibility never before possible.
To address this data deluge, scientific communities worldwide are designing, implementing, and operating specialized distributed environments that integrate instrumentation, high-performance computation, data storage repositories, analytic sites, visualization facilities, and networks, enabling data transport among all those resources.
Consequently, a global community of scientists, network research organizations, network providers, standards organizations, and industry researchers have established multiple collaborations, including those centered on the Global Research Platform, to address key issues related to next-generation large-scale science networking.
